EXTRACTION: ON THE MARGINS

finned alive

12”x9” edition of 28 prints

In response to a call for work through the California Society of Printmakers; EXTRACTION a themed portfolio project with 21 CSP members producing an edition of 28 prints each, my project focused on the ocean and land respectively. Having seen documentation on shark finning and the most recent film "Seaspiracy".

Humans are the top predators of the world. We pilage the ocean for wonton gain. Conservationist estimate that up to 100 million sharks are brutally killed annually. The poaching and extraction of fins from sharks is a deplorable example of the worst of humanity. Most sharks are caught, finned and dumped back in the ocean to die from suffocation or to be eaten still alive by predators.

My final edition of prints was created with a 4 color reduction woodcut, a 1 color screenprint, and finished with gold and silver leaf. I am inticing the viewer to look closer at the sparkle of it all and then take note of the horrific tragedy.

The edition of 28 prints was exchanged among 21 contributung artists. Editions one through seven were designated for museum, library, or archive placement.
